Physical Support

A woman helps a pregnant person using a birthing ball in a cozy room with city views, pink plants, a TV, and comfy furniture.

This is what, I think, doulas are most known for, especially birth doulas. You are probably thinking hip squeezes, sacral pressure, position changes, shoulder massages, etc. These are certainly all ways doulas can help while a person is in labor, but did you know our support of the physical body goes beyond that?

Doulas spend time learning about the anatomy and physiology of pregnancy and birth, and we share that information with you. Feeling overwhelming nausea? We can help you understand why and offer relief measures. Pelvic pain making movement difficult? We can show you ways to move your body that relieve pressure. Interested in exercises that encourage optimal fetal positioning? We got you!

We can offer great tips and suggestions for feeling your best in your ever-changing body, and sometimes you need a little more. Doulas can connect you with resources in the community, like chiropractic care and body work, for more in-depth, focused treatment and care.

Whether you know you like hands-on care or are still exploring the idea, I want to stress that consent is everything, and doulas highly value consent, especially when it comes to physical support. We know that there are many hands-on techniques that can provide relief, and we also know that trauma is real and not to be taken lightly. You are always in control of what happens to your body when we work with you.

When hiring a birth doula, come for the hip squeezes, stay for all the other relief measures!
