Stop Shoulding On Yourself
I remember the first time I heard this phrase. I was sitting in a group of other people, seeking support for challenges we were facing, and someone said something along the lines of, "I'm trying to learn how not to should all over myself." I immediately loved it and began using it in my everyday life. So many of us go through life with higher expectations than are realistic or healthy. We seek perfection: the perfect house, the perfect job, the perfect family. When we fail to

Advocacy
This might be my favorite area of support as a doula. Doulas act as advocates for you and your wishes. We get to know you and your partner, if applicable, and learn what matters most to you as you navigate this journey. We cannot control any aspect of birth, any more than you or your provider can, but we can serve as a middle person to both remind you of your most important wishes and to help communicate these desires to your providers when necessary. Advocacy starts well bef

Physical Support
This is what, I think, doulas are most known for, especially birth doulas. You are probably thinking hip squeezes, sacral pressure, position changes, shoulder massages, etc. These are certainly all ways doulas can help while a person is in labor, but did you know our support of the physical body goes beyond that? Doulas spend time learning about the anatomy and physiology of pregnancy and birth, and we share that information with you. Feeling overwhelming nausea? We can help

Emotional Support
While not licensed mental health professionals, doulas are able to offer valuable emotional support during the perinatal period. We hold space for all feelings and experiences, without judgment, so that you can process fears, joys, anxieties, and successes. During labor, we remind you of how strong and capable you are, providing the motivation you may need to keep going. As you and your family are settling into new routines, we listen to the challenges you are facing and cele

Informational Support
One of the more important but often understated roles of a doula is to provide information and education throughout pregnancy, birth, and the postpartum period. This is not meant to take the place of guidance provided by your medical provider; it is meant to supplement the guidance you are receiving from your doctor or midwife. Feeling intense nausea and looking for ways to settle your stomach? We have suggestions for that. Experiencing round ligament pain and wondering how t

What is a doula anyway?
Doula is a word than many people are familiar with, but do you know what a doula's actual role is in the perinatal period? The word doula comes from the Greek word meaning "one who serves." As long as people have been birthing, there have been doulas, even if they were not labeled as such. In fact, the word "doula" did not come into popular use until the 1960s/1970s. In current times, there has been a distinct shift in the recognition of the value of labor and postpartum supp

The First Spark
I still remember the first time I fell in love with pregnancy and birth. I was a teen, around 16 years old, when I stumbled upon a video on PBS called The Miracle of Life. If you have not had the pleasure of viewing this presentation , it is worth the hour of your time. In this video, we follow the creation and development of an embryo, then fetus, then infant as the woman pushes her baby into the world. When I first watched this, it felt like magic. What an incredible proces
